Hero's Theme (w.i.p)

"Nice"

date: October 22, 2006

You call this a work in progress? I call this a work that kicks ass!

This is definetly a great piece of music. It confuses me however, how this got into the Classical genre. It seems more Techno than anything else. The beats are cool and inventive and the synths are a great addition.

Author's Response:

hmmm, techno? Idk... techno usually has a 4 step beat to it. I guess with all the synths and stuff it could get confusing. :P

thanks for the review! :)

Ode to the lonely

"First Attempt Ehh?"

submission: Ode to the lonely
date: October 22, 2006

So this was your first attempt at classic?

Hard to believe if you ask me, cause you hit classic square in the forehead.

When i look for good music, i tend to look for music that has a nice subdued tempo and feel. You hit the spot. The only thing i request is more music.

Remember however, that you want your music to be somewhat and reasonably diverse. I hate it when people use the same instrumentation for the same song, so that everything sounds exactly the same.

The recurring theme is beautiful and well composed. The chording (If you did it conciously bravo!) was well done and spoke thousands of words.

You might want to add voices and choral singing, violins, brass, flutes, clarinets etc. That will help as far as instrumentation works. Obscure the piano but keep the same melody flowing throughout the piece. Then when you hit the climax, end the orchestral part with a closing phrase, followed by the revieling of the solo instrument (In this case Piano) once again, giving it an eerie quiet feeling.

Gets my 5 and goes onto my ipod. Great work

"Wow"

date: October 22, 2006

This one was definetly a shoker, compared to the overall theme from "Truth" and "Wonderment". I liked the whole ACoustic Guitar bass that never truly gives away anything. It expresses a feeling of hope almost. The rapid violin section gives it a shape and a form, and your description of what is going on, fits perfectly.

Author's Response:

It seems my themes change around far too frequently, in fact it's almost exactly monthly, every month i'll change myself to another theme, sometimes i'll change the theme around during the month, but overall I can't compose the same type of theme for too long without taking breakers like this.

I'm glad you found the song enjoyable, this one is still one of my personal fav's. Thank you again for all the support you've shown me, truly means a good deal to me. Thanks again for this review ^^.

"Ok..."

date: October 22, 2006

While its still a good piece (Don't get me wrong) if listened to a few of your other pieces, and i must say, there are a lot of notable similarities.

I WILL STRESS INSTRUMENTATION:
You seem to use a lot of strings as back up and flute as main. I don't particularly have a love assosiaction with the flute. How about if you back off on the flute, and have woodwinds accompany the strings?

Also, you might want to examine your palette once again. remember you have woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings. You have still yet to use English Horn, French Horn, Trombone, TRumpet, Piano, and a low cello soli kinda thing.

Over all its a good piece. It makes it on to my ipod.

Author's Response:

Isn't the flute a woodwind?

Actually there is french horns being used here, they are the bass end of the song, and low cello's are playing the string chords, though not solo, they are there.

My two favourite instruments are strings and bells (which choirs coming in very close third), so that would explain why I have them pransing around so much :D.

As for my palette, I don't really like to stick to traditional instruments, though I have been gearing towards them more frequently lately, I like to mix it up with instruments not commonly used. Mandorin, Dulcimer, and the whistle in this song's case.

Thank you for the review, again your bring up valid points, i'm glad you found the song enjoyable ^^.

"CLear Clean Sound"

date: October 22, 2006

i know i may sound like an HD radio commercial but this was definetly one of the highlights of my listenings. The themes were well supported by the violin backgrounds which moved little but kept the beat rythym time etc right.

For improvement:
Try and make the song longer, this was a good song with a good theme and good concepts, but if you were to extend it and move the song along at different speeds, it would have been a masterpiece.

I didn't love the bells, cause to me it ruined the theme of the song. It was mysterious, almost like music for like a lone rider or elf person thing looking over a large open plain. Or in that one scene from Lord of the Rings, where they are all running through a mountain area, and the camera does a slow loop around.

Dire NEed of:
while the instrumentation was definetly overwhelming and clear, i would maybe use something more than strings, clarinet, oboe (I think) and flute. Try maybe some light brass and trombone, for a suspense tense affect.

Author's Response:

Hmm, I can see where you are coming from, this song in particular really wasn't aiming for any suspenseful themes. The image I had for this was standing on a cliff, overlooking a great sparkling lake, the gentle wind rustling the tree's, as the sun sets gently. Cliche? Maybe, but the image spoke to me, and so I had to make this.

However the points you bring up are quite interesting ones. I will definately have to one day sit down and try them out, who knows, it may unlock another vision for me.

Thank you for the review, i'm glad you enjoyed the piece ^^.

Dealey Plaza - Screw It

"one mistake that threw it off"

date: October 21, 2006

Im no expert in ska... i deal more in classic music... but this was actually pretty good by any one's standards.

However... i think i spotted a mistake... the first time the second voice came in... it sounded off key... ya know? not in tune with the rest of the band.

The main voice is also too quite for my taste.

Also... if you could tell me the instrumentation for this... it would be really helpful.

Welcome to the Field

"nice"

date: October 21, 2006

the drum beat was nice and pounding, giving the music shape and suspense, and luckily and thankfully you didn't over kill it.

The break for the airs with the choir and the strings was marvalent. the chording after the harsh drum area was benevolent.

The retuen was a little harsh and un expected, i would try and ease it in with a short transition.

Author's Response:

A true expert.

Jazzin in your face

"It was ok... but not true jazz"

date: October 21, 2006

it was a good attempt at jazz... but i dfound it lacked the true feel of jazz.

The beat was as u said... funky./.... different... interesting.

i never new that violin was in jazz.... especially this exclusively. Try and put it in more trumpet and trombone. Then you could have some "Shout" sections, where you have the whole thing moving and switching toward the same chords, creating a real nice harmony.

If you wanna hear what jazz is really about... go listen to "straight no chaser" By themolineus monk. Or Take Five by Dave Brubeck.

Listen to a few jazz hits for inspiration will you?

Author's Response:

Meh i was bored not really a jazz fan

submission: urban symphony (L)

I was expecting more thatn an endless loop. When the drums finally came in i thought "Finally" something new.

When you sqitched with that sudden brake, it was kinda unexpected. If you made this move and bounce and be mroe fluid, i would download it, but as of now, i want to see some more movement.

Also i like the first maybe 15 seconds after the switch and that was interesting.

THe last switch i think (The third one) sounds good, just make sure not to loop it to many times cause then it just makes your ears hurt.

The 4th transition was good. this sounds like a good place to close.... but you seem to be over killing on it.... wait nvm i see you were fading out...

Othe than that, its a pretty decent piece. Keep at it.

hmmm ok i over did it

It, in itself is a very good piece. Just try and get rid of the name, and i might just download it... but as it is... i dont like the name... the only bad thing about it,

Author's Response:

Sorry. It was a desperate cry for attention.

Thanks for your review, though. Constructive criticism is always welcomed.
